Design and manufacturing of an over center locking mechanism used in leak testing of Tesla inverters
This is one of my personal favorite projects. At Tesla, I was working on the pilot line, a team that does a mock up assembly line before mass volume production. I was tasked with creating a tool that would easily latch onto and seal with a Tesla inverter.Â
The design I concluded on has the upright columns with hooks that latch onto existing pins on the inverter. The locking mechanism is an over center locking design from which I took inspiration from vise grip pliers. The handle gives plenty of leverage to clamp down on the latch pins and seal properly. The threaded hole seen above is a plumbing thread that connects to a leak test machine. In testing, the tool sealed perfectly and passed the pressure testing specified by Tesla.
